Read on to find out more about Laura and her beautiful collection:

1. Tell me about yourself. What is your background and how did you get involved with designing kidswear?
Hey! I’m Laura and I own the children’s wear label Alittle pocket. I’m originally from a small Country town and moved to Melbourne in 07 to study Fashion design. I realized I had a passion for children’s clothing while working on an assignment based on children’s clothing. After graduating from Uni and all the while looking for work, I started sewing from home for my family, which I really enjoyed. I mainly sewed kids clothes and slowly grew a customer base in my hometown and gained a lot of great feedback. I thought “yeah I’m gonna give this label thing a crack!. And to cut a long story short, here I am, growing this cool little business and having a ball with it. Oh and I don’t have kids, lots of people assume I have kids because of my interest in children’s clothes. Nope just me and my FiancĂ© and our many gold fish (that we can’t seem to keep for very long.. and yes I have a filter and lighting and water conditioners. Sorry completely off topic! But if anyone has advice feel free to share.)

    2. Tell us about Alittle Pocket what are your inspirations when you are designing, how did the name Alittle Pocket come about?
simply design styles that I would love to wear! My favorite part of the design process is fabric sourcing; I find this is where I get my inspiration. I find that simple styles coupled with unique fabrics create designs with an edge. I also design for comfort and room for play! What can I say, I love comfy yet cool looking kids! My 3 rules when designing clothing is that they must be Comfortable, easy care and super cool.

    3. Do you listen to music while you design? What are you listening to right now and does this influence your collection
I always listen to music when I design. It certainly helps me be more creative. Right now I’m listening to Joshua James and James Vincent Mc Morrow. Great music.

    4. Describe your style; does this influence your collection?
Wherever I go I need to feel comfortable, which is one thing that influences my children’s wear. I love colour and unique designs. I create ranges that I wish I had in my own wardrobe! I can’t believe how many people ask if I do adults so perhaps there may be something in the future for the big kids!

    5. Who are your favourite designers? Womenswear and kidswear?
To be completely honest I don’t have a favorite Fashion designer. That was the first question I was asked when going to Uni and I remember lying because I felt ridiculous studying Fashion and not having a favorite designer!  There are a lot of talented designers out there, whether it’s Fashion, home decor or textile designers. I love Kaffe Fassette, he creates amazing prints, tapestries and knits.

    6. If you could collaborate with anyone in the world, who would this be?  Why?
I had never given this thought, but if I had to collaborate with someone I would have to say Kathryn Del Barton. She’s an Aussie artist and her paintings are amazing, some a little too grown up for kids, but certain parts of her paintings would look awesome as printed fabric

7.Do you have a favourite cafĂ©, shop, book store, etc. you gain inspiration from or a place you can go and just relax and ponder?
I love going to cool little cafĂ©s and finding new places to hang out. Melbourne’s a great city to live, Lots of great places to go and creative individuals to meet. I do a lot of relaxing and pondering when visiting my family in my hometown, Robinvale. I was there recently and the minute you drive in to the town you instantly feel good, like “yes time to chill out and catch up with Family”. I didn’t realize how much I loved Robinvale until I moved away and now I really appreciate how great it is.

    8. What’s next for Alittle Pocket? Any exciting news or collaborations happening soon?
No collaborations however I’ll be working on Spring/Sumer 13 range very soon which is exciting! I’m also hoping to do more wholesaling so if any retailers are reading this feel free to contact me!

    9. What’s the best advice someone has given you?
The best advice I’ve been given is by my Mum, she always tells me to be happy. Pretty simple I know but at the end of the day it’s the most important thing. When I was little and worried about things, she would sing Que Sera Sera (Whatver will be, will be). And her and Dorris Day are absolutely right!

   10. Any advice you have for us, something you have learned lately?
My best advice would be to enjoy life as its too short. Do what you love and follow your passion. I try not to worry about the little things anymore because there are worse things in life and realizing this really puts things in to perspective. One of my favourite quotes:

Life is not a rehearsal
Each day is a new show.
No repeat, no rewind, no retake
So give your best shot in all your acts.
As the show goes on and on and on”

   11.  If you could travel anywhere right now where would that be? Why?
I’m travelling to the USA very soon! Woo hoo! This is the first time I will be going over seas, I hope to go to as many places around the world as possible, so first stop, USA!

   12.  Favourite childhood memory.
I had a great childhood! I have too many wonderful memories to have a favorite. I loved family holidays, Christmas’s and birthdays were always fun. My family owns a grape farm, so loads of acres for motorbike riding, which was something my cousins and me did all the time!  I’ve known my FiancĂ© and one of my bestest friends since kinder, they are both important people in my life.I grew up in a loving and supporting family, which to me, is one of the most important things growing up.
